Pre-Algebra Practice: Integers, Ratios and Simple Equations
Most pre-algebra is grades 6-7. Advanced 5th graders often enjoy it as a stretch.
Pre-algebra is the bridge from arithmetic to algebra. It is where letters start standing in for numbers and where negative numbers become everyday tools.
Negative numbers
Subtracting a negative is the same as adding a positive: 5 - (-2) = 7. Multiplying two negatives gives a positive.
Ratios and rates
A ratio compares two amounts. A unit rate tells you how much for one, which makes comparing easy.
Solving equations
An equation is a balance. Whatever you do to one side, do to the other, and undo operations in reverse order.
Worked examples
Solve x - 9 = 4
- Add 9 to both sides
- x = 13
Solve 4x + 3 = 27
- Subtract 3: 4x = 24
- Divide by 4: x = 6
Which is a better deal: 4 for $6 or 6 for $8?
- 4 for $6 is $1.50 each
- 6 for $8 is about $1.33 each
- 6 for $8 is cheaper per item
